Introducing Initiate & Disrupt

A practical guide to overcoming fear, stepping out of your comfort zone, and doing work that actually matters, long before you feel ready. At its heart, it is a story about leadership, told through the growth and choices of six characters.
Why Read This Book?

Stop Waiting for Perfect Conditions

Brilliant people often stall because they want the perfect plan, the perfect timing, or the perfect conditions. But progress only comes when we start, even when it is messy and uncertain. Initiate & Disrupt is a challenge to stop waiting and start acting. Through relatable characters and powerful real-world case studies, this book will show you how to turn failure into fuel, embrace the hustle advantage, and become truly indispensable.
Giving Back

Your Purchase Changes Lives

50% of all sales from Initiate & Disrupt go directly to Home of Hope for Girls. This registered charity provides a safe residence, education, and rehabilitation for children and teens who have survived abusive situations, particularly those linked to child exploitation and trafficking. Their vision is simple: to restore safety, dignity, and opportunity to vulnerable children, proving that a girl’s background does not define her future.

Meet the Cast

This is a book about people. People who could be your colleagues, your neighbours, your friends or even you. To make these ideas come alive, you will meet six characters. Each of them comes from a different background in South Africa, but all of them wrestle with the same struggles you do.  Fear, hesitation, ambition, failure, and growth.  You will see yourself in some of them. You will be frustrated by others. But by the end, you will recognise that their stories are really just mirrors of our own.

Thabang: The Reluctant Starter

Thabang works in corporate.  He is well-paid and respected, but restless. He is sharp, ambitious, and always has a side hustle idea bouncing around in his head. Yet he never starts. He tells himself he is “waiting”, for the market to settle, for savings to build up, for a perfect website or logo. Deep down, Thabang knows he is stalling and is waiting because of fear. His journey is about learning that waiting is a disease, and imperfect action is the cure.

Liu: The Bold Doer

Liu moves fast. Sometimes too fast. While others are still planning, he has already launched, tested, and failed at a new venture. His friends call him reckless, but he would rather fail than wait. He has the bruises to prove it.  Ideas and projects that collapsed and fizzled. He also has resilience. Liu’s lesson is simple. Failure is not the opposite of success but rather the raw material for it.

Kimmaliah: The Reluctant Leader

Kimmaliah never planned on being in charge. A talented lawyer, she imagined a career of solid work behind the scenes. Then she was promoted,  suddenly leading a team she did not feel ready to guide. Her first instinct was to decline the promotion. But saying yes forced her to confront her doubts. Kimmaliah ’s story shows that nobody is ever truly ready for leadership.  Courage creates competence.

Waven: The Veteran

Waven has seen it all. With decades of experience in mining administration, he knows how things used to work. He is respected, wise, and a natural storyteller. But wisdom can turn into comfort, and comfort can become a cage. Waven struggles to adapt to new ways of working, resisting the disruption around him. His arc is about learning that true wisdom is about staying teachable.

Milano: The Hustler

Milano grew up helping in his family’s café. He never had much, but he always had a knack for making a plan. Where others see obstacles, he sees angles. Resourceful, street-smart, and endlessly creative, Milano does not play by the traditional rules but rather bends them to make things work. His story is about how hustle and relationships often beat money and status.

Bonnie: The Idealist

Bonnie grew up with options. Educated, thoughtful, and principled, she has big ideas about changing the world. Her weakness? She often chases the “perfect model”, the perfect plan that will solve everything. But perfection is just another disguise for fear. Bonnie’s journey is about learning that the world does not need perfect solutions. It needs messy, real action.

Disclaimer

A note on the cast. Thabang, Liu, Kimmaliah, Waven, Milano and Bonnie are composite fictional characters. They are not based on, and do not represent, any specific person, living or dead. The case studies that follow each chapter are about real individuals and organisations and are sourced from public reporting.

Case Studies That Bring the Ideas to Life

Each chapter in Initiate & Disrupt is grounded in a real case study, because ideas become more powerful when we can see them lived out in the real world.  These are not decorative examples added at the end of a chapter. They are there to show what initiative, failure, courage, reinvention, generosity, trust and leadership look like when the stakes are real.

From entrepreneurs and activists to artists, companies, leaders and movements, each case study gives the reader a practical window into the central lesson of the chapter. The fictional cast carries the human tension of the book.

The case studies show that the same tensions have played out in real life, across countries, industries and moments in history. People waited, failed, adapted, disrupted, stood out, built trust, faced fear and kept going.

Together, they remind us that courage is not theory. Initiative is not a slogan. Disruption is not noise for the sake of noise. These are choices made by people who decided to act before conditions were perfect.

Core Takeaways

Truth Bombs That Stay With You

At the end of each chapter, Initiate & Disrupt leaves you with short, sharp Truth Bombs. They are the lines that cut through the excuses. The ones that make you pause, wince a little, and ask whether you have been waiting, hiding, polishing, overthinking or playing too small.

The stories and case studies give the lesson shape. The Truth Bombs give it force. They are written to be remembered. Simple enough to carry into a meeting, a difficult decision, a new project, a failed attempt, or a moment when fear starts sounding like logic.

A Field Guide to Action

This is not a standard textbook. The chapters are short, blunt, and designed to push you forward. The journey is broken down into four distinct parts:

Part 1: Breaking the Patterns

Overcome the “Waiting Disease,” unlearn outdated rules, and discover how to turn your failures into fuel.

Part 2: Becoming Indispensable

Learn the true cost of being average, how to embrace the “Linchpin Mindset,” and why connection is your most valuable currency.

Part 3: Building Significance

Master the invisible emotional labour of leadership, build a rhythm of trust, and start treating people as humans rather than resources.

Part 4: Integration & Legacy

Forge unlikely partnerships, learn to dance with your fear, and find the deep courage to simply keep going.

Mindset Mastery

The Foundation: Mindset Mastery

Before disrupting the rules, you have to master your mindset. In 2024, Sodhie Naicker published his first book, Mindset Mastery: 99 Quotes That Rewired My Brain. Launched entirely independently without an agent, publicist, or formal launch plan, the book is a living case study in taking action before feeling “ready”. It served as the catalyst for Sodhie’s speaking and thought leadership, ultimately giving him the confidence to write Initiate & Disrupt.
